Neck Pain

Neck pain is a more common medical condition than most people think. Neck pain is a common complaint and can come from several disorders and diseases and can involve any of the tissues in the neck.

Some of the most common conditions that cause neck pain are degenerative disc disease, neck strain, osteoarthritis, cervical spondylosis, spinal stenosis, and often, poor posture. Neck injury such as whiplash, a herniated disc, or a pinched nerve can also cause neck pain.

If you have been experiencing neck pain for any reason and it has lasted more than a few days, it is advisable to come see one of our neck specialist chiropractors here at Advanced Spinal Care Center in Spanish Fork.

Neck pain can also come from conditions that directly affect the muscles of the neck, such as fibromyalgia as well as from uncomfortable positioning of the neck while sleeping with the head on a pillow. Neck pain is also referred to as “cervical pain”.

Neck pain is often associated with symptoms such as headache, facial pain, shoulder pain, and arm numbness or tingling. These painful symptoms can often be from nerves becoming pinched in the neck. And, depending on the condition, sometimes neck pain can also be accompanied by symptoms such as upper back and/or lower back pain.

There is also something now referred to as “Cell Phone” Syndrome - This is another form of neck strain, and it’s a real thing. Too many hours hunched over your phone can strain the neck muscles and tendons. Actually, too much time hunched over anything, your computer or workbench -- can do the same thing.

It forces your head to snap forward suddenly and then back again, like a whip. Aside from neck pain, you also may experience headaches that start at the base of your skull and tingling, numbness, or pain in your upper back or arms.

In rare cases, neck pain can be a symptom of a more serious problem. Seek medical care if your neck pain is accompanied by numbness or loss of strength in your arms or hands or if you have shooting pain into your shoulder or down your arm.
