Sciatica

What exactly is sciatica? It is a type of Back pain that comes in all shapes and sizes. It can flare up immediately after an injury or appear slowly and mysteriously over a period of weeks or even months. It might be sudden and short-lived (acute) or long-lasting (chronic).

Over-the-counter medicines can help temporarily with some types of back pain, but if your pain persists, an effective chiropractor like the ones here is our Spanish Fork office (who has the proper diagnosis) can help find out why it hurts, and how to fix it and how to help so that your healing is long term.

Sometimes it’s hard to identify the source of your back pain, but other times you can pinpoint it easily.  Sciatica caused pain is pretty simple to identify.

It usually starts with a herniated disk in your lumbar (lower) back. Your vertebrae (the bones that make up your spine) are separated and cushioned by flat, flexible, round “disks” of connective tissue.

When a disk starts to where out - maybe because of an injury or just years of use – The disc’s soft center can begin to push out from the side.

When this happens, it is called a “herniated” disc, it can put pressure on the nerves around it. This can cause a lot of pain when that happens to be pushing on the sciatic nerve.

The sciatic nerve starts in your lower back and runs through your hips, buttocks, legs, and both feet. It is the longest nerve in your body. If you have bone spurs or spinal stenosis (narrowing) these can also put pressure on the sciatic nerve in the lower back. When any of this happens, it can cause a lot of problems all the way down the nerve. It can be very painful and debilitating.

Our chiropractors can help you get some pain relief from your sciatica nerve and even find ways to help strengthen your whole body to help prevent it from returning.  If you would like relief with your sciatica pain, come to our office in Spanish Fork, or call us today at 801-823-3112 and let’s talk about some ways to help you feel better!
